Reflecting on 10 Years of Artemis Canada: 10 Things that Haven't Changed

As we celebrate 10 years since Artemis Canada launched, I’ve reflected on the business of executive search within the tech ecosystem and all that has changed in the past decade. Interestingly, I found that while technologies and company names have changed, the most important things have remained consistent.

With that in mind, here is my list of 10 things that haven’t changed in the 10 years of Artemis:

1. Every day we learn.

The founders and leaders we work with have fascinating stories and unique motivations.

We have the privilege of listening to these stories and learning how to help people achieve their goals.

2. Every day we are amazed.

The founders and innovators we work with see problems as challenges to be solved with technology. What they are capable of achieving is amazing.

3. Companies come and go. Great people remain.

The companies we have worked with over the years have ALL changed - whether they’ve changed names, been acquired, disappeared, or folded into something new.

However, the great people behind the companies remain great. They continue to grow, evolve, and contribute to the success of other companies along their career journey.

4. Great rookies can outplay experience on autopilot.

This is one that I didn’t always appreciate, but when I started to notice it and saw the data, it was undeniable. Someone who brings curiosity and a learner's mindset to a new problem can often outperform a veteran who will assume that what they did in the past will work again now.

5. There is value in small-town values and small details.

There is something special about approaching your community and your customers like valued neighbours. Extending kindness and courtesy, and paying attention to small details will set apart a great employer, a great leader, and a great recruiter.

6. Execution of a good idea will outperform sitting on a great idea.

When great leaders can assemble teams that can execute brilliantly - they’ll turn a good idea into something incredible. Similarly, a founding team that fails to execute, will not get a brilliant idea off the ground.

7. Great people want to work with great leaders.

Over time, a top criterion for our best candidates is the desire to work with leaders who are inspiring and kind, and who have proven that they can build a great business.

8. Great people want to solve important problems.

This has always been the case, but we’ve seen it emerge as even more critical for great candidates. They want to be part of a mission-driven business. As a result, we’ve doubled down on our own commitment to tech for good.

9. A great team is much more than the sum of its parts.

Building a great team is as much about a strong fit among a group of peers as it is about finding an individual who is the best in their domain. A team that communicates, is well-aligned and has diverse strengths and skills that augment each other, will always win.

10. Great matchmaking requires:

  • Curiosity

  • Listening with generosity, and

  • A genuine desire for the best outcome.

I’ve hired and worked with great recruiters for more than 20 years. These are all traits that we value in our own team at Artemis and that we hope you’ll notice when you work with us.

Thank you for being part of this incredible 10-year journey. We hope to be part of your career and entrepreneurial journeys for many years to come.
