Who Is First Acre Insurance™ & How Are They Changing the World?
We’re partnering with a new startup, founded in 2021, poised to launch its first product offering this Fall.
First Acre Insurance™ is tackling a big opportunity at the intersection of technology, insurance and agriculture in Canada. They will be offering insurance for the full operations of a farm - which is innovative in the industry.
But they aren’t stopping there, they are taking agriculture insurance and modernizing everything about the way it is offered, how land and equipment are surveyed & tracked and how sensors and data can be used, as just some examples. For the first time in the industry, farmers will have access to customized & digitally supported insurance solutions that will give them holistic solutions, a more seamless experience and less worry.
First Acre has a unique structure as well. It was formed as a joint venture between two established mutual insurance companies (Red River Mutual and The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group) in order to create a standalone entity to drive innovation in farm insurance (you can read the press release here). The founding partners have funded this venture in order to invest in addressing a changing, complex and underserved market, bringing ag insurance into the 21st century.
First Acre is ready to introduce innovative digital products to the agriculture insurance industry for the first time. They have a small but powerful founding team, secured ongoing funding and support, and are focused on innovation with a near ready-to-go initial product offering.
How Will I Make An Impact?
This is a great opportunity to join an early-stage company, with the stability of strong backing and long-term support from two larger companies. We see it as the best of both worlds.
The product is ready to launch this Fall, meaning the initial build is nearly complete, but there is still lots to do! There are more features and products to be added, planning for scale and quality to be done, evaluating security needs, building out a robust data strategy and prioritizing new updates are next on the agenda.
We’re looking for someone who is a natural collaborator. You will have great partners on the team who understand the product direction with deep industry domain experience. We’re looking for a technical counterpart to help drive the technical strategy & execution forward - both in building capabilities internally and working with external vendors.
Does This Sound Like You?

You will continue to develop and enhance the company’s technical strategy including their recent acquisition of Douglas Cost Guides

You’ll play a key role in the launch, scaling & ongoing support of the product delivery to meet customers' demands

You’ll ensure that security is a continued priority

You’ll evaluate and implement new systems, infrastructure and technologies (ie. the company might explore the use of sensors/IoT, AI, etc)

You can build relationships and integrations with external IT vendors, service providers and potential B2B partnerships

You’ll actively participate in product development with coding where needed (or the knowledge of what needs to be done to guide others)

You’re up for building, managing and developing a team eventually

You'll bring ideas to the table in team brainstorming sessions, explore novel technologies, and promote innovation within the insurance and agriculture sector
Our Ideal Candidate Looks Like:

Experience with an early-stage company (and if you’ve been part of a team who brought a new product to market, that is a great asset)

A collaborative mindset to partner closely with the team and brainstorm ideas together

Entrepreneurial, self-motivated and results-oriented with the innate ability to drive strategic opportunities from discovery to closure

Experience with leading and shaping both the technology strategy & execution

Experience developing and managing third-party managed services partnerships (including contract negotiations)

Experience growing and managing a team using strong interpersonal skills to connect with leaders and employees

An openness to be client-facing and speak at different events to represent the brand

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, plus a knack for creative problem-solving

Experience with the strategic management of and utilization of data

Experience with B2B integrations

Experience with web and mobile development

Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS

An interest in exploring and evaluating new technologies that First Acre can consider (ie. IoT, AI, etc)

Agile project management is an asset

Experience leading IT/Technology functions

Team player with a ‘roll up your sleeves’ attitude...it’s a startup after all!
Nice to haves:

Experience working with an InsurTech or in the financial services space would be an asset, to have an understanding of how regulated industries operate

An interest in Agriculture would be an added bonus - this team is passionate about the end customer & delivering value
Location:

We’re open to anywhere across Canada, as this position is remote

Some flexibility with travel will be needed for team offsites and occasional events
